Glossary:

Highly Purified Water (HPW)

Highly Purified Water (HPW) is used where water with high microbiological quality is required. The essential properties of HPW include:

  • Conductivity: < 1.1 µS/cm at 20°C
  • Bacteria: < 10 CFU/100 ml
  • Endotoxins: < 0.25 IU/ml
  • TOC: < 500 ppb
  • Appearance: clear, colorless and odorless liquid.

The required water quality thus corresponds to the requirements for Water for Injection (WFI). However, the difference lies in the manufacturing process: While only the distillation process is permitted for WFI in the area of validity of the EAB, this is not mandatory for HPW. Instead, the following processes may currently be used:

  • Double-stage reverse osmosis with subsequent ultrafiltration
  • Double-stage reverse osmosis followed by electrochemical treatment (EDI)
  • Reverse osmosis with EDI followed by reverse osmosis again
  • Reverse osmosis with EDI and following ultrafiltration
