Glossary:

Cleaning in Place (CIP)

Cleaning in Place is in-process cleaning of process equipment that requires no (or only minimal) disassembly. The process runs manually or fully automatically and includes all components and pipelines that come into direct or indirect contact with the substances used. Cleaning agents, pressure ratios, temperatures and times are precisely specified in advance according so called Sinner’s circle and are accurately documented during the cleaning process.

While there are hardly any formal differences to the term "Wash in Place" (WIP, Washing in Place), WIP is nevertheless usually seen as a comparable process with lower hygienic requirements and higher manual effort.
