Tungsten Inert Gas Welding

Tungsten inert gas welding is a welding process used mainly for high-alloy austenitic (= non-magnetic, heat- and corrosion-resistant) stainless steel.

In this process, an arc is ignited between a non-burning tungsten electrode and the steel, which melts the weld metal. The stainless steel melted in the resulting weld pool forms a new microstructure as it cools (see also orbital welding).
