Orbital Welding

Orbital welding-technology is an automated tungsten inert gas welding process used primarily in pipeline construction, where pipes or other round bodies are provided with seams.

The basic components of any orbital welding system are a computer-controlled power source and an orbital welding head that performs the actual welding process. It is designed to be either open or closed. In the closed version, it completely encloses the pipe. In this way, the pipe seam cannot oxidize on the outside.

The inside of the pipe must be formed to protect it from oxidation. This is done by supplying certain gas mixtures of nitrogen and hydrogen (forming gas). The open design of the orbital welding head does not completely enclose the pipe. This means that there is no closed shielding gas chamber. On the other hand, the open design allows filler materials to be fed in.
