Glossary:
A PLC is a digitally programmable device for controlling and regulating systems.
The connection is made by means of actuators and sensors (e.g. valves or temperature sensors), which are connected to the inputs and outputs of the PLC. A user program is used to define how the outputs are to be switched in relation to the inputs of the device so that the plant fulfills its full function.
Above a certain plant size, the PLC is built up modularly according to the requirements. Here, input/output modules and various function modules can be combined. For reasons of space, compact devices are used for very small applications.
